Program Overview
Spare Key is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to provide financial assistance for Minnesota homeowners with a critically ill or seriously injured child.

Spare Key does this by making a mortgage payment directly to a family's lender on their behalf after all paid leave has been exhausted or when the child’s medical care has resulted in a demonstrated significant reduction of income or increase in expenses.

The diagnosis or injury does not have to be terminal; our Guidelines require a 21-day hospitalization implying the child's condition is serious and/or critical.

To find out if Spare Key could help your family or somebody you know, review the Program Guidelines (above) or call 952-406-8872. Families are also often referred to Spare Key by a social worker at the hospital and they will assist with the application process.

If you wish to apply for a mortgage grant, please note the application box (above) to download. Applications must be received on or before the last day of the month to be considered for funding the following month.

Population that benefits from Spare Key mortgage assistance:

People plan for their homes, career changes, children, and college, but, no one plans for a child’s critical illness or injury.

Nearly 75% of the Spare Key children facing these serious illnesses are under the age of 5.  It is very critical for parents of small children to be able to be with their children during their hospitalization.

We had thought this stay would be short, about 4-10 days. But here we are, 22 days later!
